What is SPRAVATO®?

SPRAVATO® (esketamine) CIII is the first and only FDA-approved prescription nasal spray for adults living with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). It is designed for adults who struggle with Major Depressive Disorder and have not found adequate relief after trying at least two different oral antidepressants. It is also prescribed alongside oral antidepressants to help treat depressive symptoms in adults experiencing acute suicidal thoughts or actions.

How SPRAVATO® Works

Unlike traditional oral antidepressants that target brain chemicals like serotonin or norepinephrine, SPRAVATO® works differently by acting as an NMDA receptor antagonist that targets glutamate a key chemical messenger in the brain thought to help regulate mood and well-being. By acting on glutamate pathways, SPRAVATO® helps restore neural connections in the brain to reduce depressive symptoms more rapidly than conventional therapies.

SPRAVATO® FAQ

How do I know if I qualify for SPRAVATO®?

P
O
SPRAVATO® is an FDA-approved prescription nasal spray specifically for adults who have treatment-resistant depression (TRD)—meaning you have tried at least two or more conventional oral antidepressants without finding adequate relief. It is also approved for adults experiencing major depressive disorder with acute suicidal thoughts or actions. During your initial consultation, Dr. Gyamfi will conduct a detailed evaluation to determine if SPRAVATO® is the right fit for your mental health journey.

Can I take SPRAVATO® at home?

P
O
No. Because SPRAVATO® can cause temporary sedation, temporary blood pressure increases, and dissociation (feeling disconnected from your thoughts or surroundings), FDA guidelines require it to be self-administered in a certified medical facility like AlyZion Psychiatry. You will take the nasal spray under direct medical supervision and stay in our comfortable clinic during a 2-hour observation period before going home.

What is the typical SPRAVATO® treatment schedule?

P
O
Treatment begins with an induction phase of two sessions per week for the first 4 weeks. During weeks 5 through 8, appointments usually transition to once a week. After the initial 8 weeks, Dr. Gyamfi will evaluate your progress to customize a maintenance schedule, which often involves sessions once every 1 to 2 weeks to sustain your improvements.

Will I need someone to drive me home after a SPRAVATO® session?

P
O
Yes. You must arrange for a trusted driver or transportation service to take you home following each treatment session. Because SPRAVATO® causes temporary sleepiness and alters reaction times, you should not drive, operate machinery, or engage in activities that require complete mental alertness until the following day after a restful night's sleep.
